Why some iPhone photos are missing when connected over USB
A USB connection does not expose your entire photo library. Items stored only in iCloud (with Optimize iPhone Storage on), Hidden items, Shared Albums, and Recently Deleted are commonly absent from what a computer sees over the cable. Download the originals to the phone or import them through another path before assuming they were transferred.
Is the phone missing, or only some photos?
If the entire phone is absent, check the connection first: unlock it, accept Trust if prompted, and try a data-capable cable or another port. If the phone appears but individual items do not, check availability and album state below before repeating the import.
Why the count is lower over USB
When you connect an iPhone to a computer, the computer reads media through the device's camera/media interface, not the Photos database. Several categories are excluded or unavailable in that mode.
- Optimized iCloud originals: with Optimize iPhone Storage, the full-resolution original lives in iCloud and the phone keeps a smaller local version. Depending on the item state, the original may not be downloadable over the cable.
- Hidden items: hidden photos may not be exposed in the standard import list.
- Shared Albums: items shared with you or by you through Shared Albums are typically not part of the standard import.
- Recently Deleted: items in the 30-day Recently Deleted window are typically not offered for import.
How to reconcile the counts
- Choose a small, known set of photos and videos in Photos that you expect to transfer.
- Compare specific items with the import list and destination, not just totals. Image Capture exports a Live Photo as a still file plus a video, so a file count need not match the Photos item count.
- If originals are stored in iCloud, download the originals you need using Apple’s documented export/download options, then check them again. Viewing a thumbnail is not proof the full original is available for USB import.
- For Hidden items, review Apple’s Image Capture guidance: on macOS 15.4 and later a locked Hidden album is excluded. Export the intended items deliberately; restore any privacy setting you change afterwards.
- For Recently Deleted items, recover them first if you want them moved.
The safe interpretation
A lower count over USB is normal and not a sign the phone lost anything. The risk runs the other way: deleting originals after a partial transfer, believing everything is on the drive when only the visible subset was copied. Always reconcile counts and check the specific categories above before deleting anything.
How Portage handles this
Portage surfaces the same limitation honestly: media that is iCloud-only, Hidden, Shared, or in Recently Deleted may not be exposed over the cable, and the app tells you when iCloud Photos appears enabled so you do not mistake a partial import for a complete one. It records what the device makes available; a completed run does not prove every item in the Photos library was included.

Portage does this workflow for you.
Portage imports iPhone originals to a drive you own, records copy checks for each import, and enables delete only after the checks pass — with your confirmation. See how it works or the setup notes.
